The Grading Policy says the course grade is replaced.

So I guess the first course does not show up on the transcript ?

My DC is a senior, graduating in a few weeks. (Yay!) I came across the transcript last night going through some files.

DC retook world language 2 in 9th grade, after having done "fine" in 8th grade in it, but really didn't learn enough for level 3. The semester grades were A and B, but we requested that the 8th grade year be replaced with the 9th grade year (both semester grades were A).

At the time, I expected the course would show on the transcript for 8th grade, but with no grade listed. However, what is actually on DC's transcript is only world language 2 in 9th grade. There is no mention of the first time DC took world language 2.

So this is what it shows:
Level 1A, grade earned, June 2016.
Level 1B, grade earned, June 2017.
Level 2A, grade earned, Jan 2019.
Level 2B, grade earned, June 2019.
Level 3A, grade earned, Jan 2020.
Level 3B, grade earned, June 2020.

If you look, there is a gap in the date the course was completed, between 1B and 2A, but it isn't very obvious unless you're thinking of each date for each course.

All HS courses the spring 2020 semester had the option of reporting grades by either the letter grade (which was the 3rd marking period boosted up by 1 letter grade) or reported as Credit/No credit. Was this when your DC got the C? So his grade during MP 3 was a D?

my DC was in HS then. We got several forms about "what class do you want for the letter grade or Credit / No Credit?" I don't know if it's too late, now. But we were getting emails very frequently in spring 2020 about this situation.

According to other posters here, it's now becoming the default to calculate the GPA whichever way advantages the student (with or without the MS classes). I haven't seen this in any official policy.

FWIW, my now-9th grader received a form after finishing HS-level classes in 7th to ask whether they wanted the classes included in their HS GPA, but nothing after the 8th-grade HS courses. That seems to reinforce the understanding that it’s now an automatic process.

Which makes sense—if they’re offering to option to omit grades from the GPA calculation, why would anyone ever choose an option that would hurt it?

Anyone know what the transcript looks like when they retake a class. My son took algebra in 7th and then again in 8th due to remote learning fiasco

It does not give the option to remove the course from being listed on the transcript, rather it removes the grade from being included in the GPA.

Thank you. This is what I was looking for. Courses will be shown on transcript but he can choose which are included in calculation of GPA

My understanding is he’d have to retake it and get a higher grade.

OP here - DS is 9th Grade. I believe his is the first year it applies to which maybe explains the Counselor not being aware. Definitely was not in place for his older sibling. I’ve searched on MCPS website with no luck so looking for assistance in finding the source information on this policy.

It depends on the age of your child. That policy is not retroactive for all students, it was supposed to start for current... 8th graders and below? Maybe? Someone will come along and correct me

My DS took a High School level course in Engineering in Middle School. COVID hit and he did not do so well in what was supposed to have been a more practical course that had to be taken virtually. He received a C grade. The course was an elective so we have asked the school to remove it from his transcript. Counselor has said they cannot do that as it is a High School level course. However, I am sure that a couple of years ago we received notification of a change in policy that allowed students to choose whether to include the grade for a High School level class taken in Middle School on their final transcript. Can anyone confirm this and point me to the information on the MCPS website so I can go back to the Counselor and challenge what I have been told. Thank you
