Geez, why so much hate for OP. It’s an odd place to be in…most of us don’t have any exposure at true wealth. I’m sure a little exposure and it’s easy to get caught up in the haze

OP, you've lost all perspective. You think of yourself as "middle class" but your HHI is $400k. The average salary in the U.S. is less than $69k! You are already very, very fortunate compared to the overwhelming majority of Americans-- not to mention the world. On top of that, you probably have a large inheritance coming your way. And I wouldn't be surprised if you're one of the DCUM posters who gets the annual "gifts" from DH's parents, assistance with private school payments, or other help. You are extremely privileged -- yet you think you don't have enough. You seem to think more money conveys superiority. Maybe it's a good idea to be thankful for what you have and be careful that you are not raising any children to be ungrateful or unaware of their good fortune.

P.S. If you think the Great Gatsby portrayed the wealthy "elite" in a good light, you may want to re-read it.

I married into a much wealthier family than I ever was or knew, and I’ve had the opposite reaction. The more time I spend around them and their circles, the less impressed I am. I guess I’m more of a Holden Caulfield—they’re all a bunch of phonies.

But she's aspiring to be Daisy. She's Nick, but hasn't figured out why Nick left yet.

I married into a family of well-off people. There members of this family who have had money for generations from having been in lucrative trades such as finance and sales. As such most members live very nice lives. My husband and I aren’t poor by any means. We’ve been to great schools and live a comfortable 400k a year existence. But when I mingle with members of extended family, I encounter the truly wealthy. It’s like they inhabit a different world. And I hate to say it, but, I want in! I now feel I relate to F Scott Fitzgerald’s middle class characters who orbit around the rich.
