Is HB considered the best? Honestly, I haven’t heard great things about HB.
Yes
Far and away. The other middle schools are by design holding pens for kids to get thru puberty — at the intro night they tell you essentially there won’t be much emphasis on academics, just emotional development
Get real. It's the same curriculum OP and not much different. It's just a self-selected group in a really nice building and much smaller. Which has a lot of pluses.
I'm the HB parent here, and this is why I put "best" in quotes. It is great, obviously, but it's still a public school with a public school curriculum and writing instruction is mediocre at best. So if the school that has a waiting list a mile long doesn't have a great writing curriculum, OP is unlikely to find an APS middle school that has a writing curriculum she'll be happy with.
But it's not like I've tested them all out, this is just my perspective.
One thing to consider, OP, is that teachers matter, and there are good teachers at every school. DD is advanced and her teachers have given her more advanced writing assignments, and I'm sure many teachers would do the same if your kid asks for it. But still, it's not like middle school teachers are sitting down one-on one with your kid to go over their weekly writing assignment that is grounded in rigorous content and giving quality critiques. You might get that in high school though.
