Curious, if that’s your opinion then why are you bothered by teachers working a second job (which may take away from their capacity to teach). I think they know their own finances better than you know theirs.

When would a first year teacher ever be paid the "average"? It is a pay scale. You start at the bottom and hopefully move up year by year through the steps.

Nope, my brother is a 4th grade teacher and is 29 years old making $100K at with mcps. My child’s tutor at 34 is making $120K in DC.

I had a second job for the first 5 years after I graduated college. And I’m not a teacher. The DC area is expensive to live in and I had student loans to pay back.

I always wanted to be a teacher.

I only pursued a teaching credential after I was married and my spouse made enough to pay the bills.

Every young teacher I work with has multiple income sources--whether coaching a high school team each season, tutoring privately outside of school, bartending on weekends, nannying in the summer...it's hard when you're first starting out.

I live in FCPS and never had a second job only because I’m married to someone who’s not a teacher. All of the single or young teachers I know have another job even if it’s just tutoring. The main thing that’s changed is I also don’t tell people I’m a teacher now if I can avoid it. There is a lot of hate out there.

I was surprised to see son’s history teacher bartending this weekend. How common is it for teachers or staff members in PWCS to work second, or even third jobs during the school year? I would imagine this impacts their ability to focus on students and lesson planning, let alone having much needed down time on the weekends?
according to my DS teacher lives in one bedroom apartment alone.
