There’s only a limited amount of loans he can take out. You cannot afford it and you have no guarantee of scholarships or merit aid. I cannot even wrap my mind around why you would be entertaining this for a kid who is doing fine.

But I was thinking catholic because they

I was hoping for college there may be some merit scholarships
Financial aid and then have him take out a loan that we would help pay back

And no significant problems just the state of DC high schools

What high school are you zoned for? You will be very, very hard pressed to find a college that is under $10,000/year total in tuition.

tend to be cheaper

I was hoping for college there may be some merit scholarships
Financial aid and then have him take out a loan that we would help pay back

Unless child is having significant problems, save the money and stay in public.

If your total college fund is only $40,000 (10,000 x 4), that means your child is going to community college first while living at home.

We do not have a lot of money and we are also divorced so we may have had more if we were still together
I don’t even know if my child would get into a private high school (which would be 10th grade fall 2023)
I was also hoping to get financial aid and our payment would be at most 10k per year
We do not have college savings but we plan to help as much as possible with payments
For both our kids

So I am wondering if we should try to put that money towards high school and worry about college later

We live in DC proper
