Why does TJ weight if everyone takes advanced classes?

This gpa will not be enough to get into ivy's. UVA is also not sure. Know few kids last year and this year with GOA 4.3 waisted or rejected.

4.3 or 4.4 is strong and your student should be proud of their efforts! Depending on other factors literally could land anywhere. Top schools would be a lottery, though (it can seem
random who gets in and who doesn’t). Don’t bet on them. Consider applying ED (have to decide at some point, right?). Schools like a commit, helps manage yield. Have a thick band of schools that you think your kid would likely get into but might not (maybe UMD and similar - NOT Va Tech engineering). Try to find a few schools that are really strong in your student’s intended major but aren’t a tough admit overall. Sometimes you will get yield protected rejected but if the essay makes a good case about why that program is special could work out. Don’t mess around and get the apps in early. Like if EA is an option, make the deadline. Good luck!

My kid graduated TJHSST with a 4.46 weighted GPA (slightly lower when she was actually applying to colleges), varsity athlete in 2 sports and debate. He was rejected by the few Ivys he applied to but got into Pitt Honors, UVA Echols, UMichigan, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon and Williams.

The GPA is ok, hard to say how many AP that equates to. If you take a look around, you will see a lot of perfect stat kids getting very few offers. Huge factor is major- if its CS, be prepared for battle. Hopefully its some obscure in which case your kid will waltz in lots of places. Hopefully you are not asian or white or if you are either, you remember your grandma was from spain before you file that application. It is actually harder to be accepted from TJ vs. other schools - my son turned down TJ after talking to a senior who couldn't get in anywhere because they were quota'ing the TJ kids (going into engineering). Truthfully, aim for schools in the 15-35 ranking range. My son had a 4.4 GPA 12 AP/DE, and a 1560 SAT, top 1% of his class and tons of amazing ECS and the highest ranked CS program he got into was #18.

Really depends on awards and ECs. Those stats will get the app considered, but you'll need some sparkle to stand out.

They admit based on Junior year GPA.

Use Naviance to figure this out, but you need to look at it knowing that different majors will admit differently.
For instance CS is super hot right now, so even though the scattergram may look like mostly green, those few reds may be in the more competitive majors.

And make sure you have a couple of good safety schools that your kid would be ok attending.

Everyone at TJ has a very high SAT so that doesn’t matter. TJ kids with these GPAs are all over the place from Ivys to t50 schools depending on course rigour and ECs

We are having a hard time putting our list together. So wanted to find out where TJ kids with 4.3 - 4.4 GPA are likely to be accepted. Our DC is probably end up in that range with after her senior year with very high SAT score.
