I grew up on a street with teachers, principals and counselors from every school I attended. Their kids were my friends. They were friends with my parents. I felt a little too seen sometimes but the other kids were in the same boat so we dealt with it. Also my mom was a teacher.

No, under normal circumstances I would not but we also had terrible interactions with our ES principal with IEP issues and she was a nasty bully. But, you get those kinds of people at every job and professional. Where else are they supposed to live.

Unless they live in a small town I think most teachers and admin deliberately don't live in the same school district they work in. Some do, of course, but most don't. I was support staff for a number of years and had no desire to see those kids outside of school hours even though I loved my job and the kids.

This. If you work in a school and live in the neighborhood, you expect to see people.

I am a teacher. Today after school I saw 4-5 former students or their parents when I ran into the grocery store to pick up some fresh corn on the cob for dinner, then I stopped at CVS and finally I pulled over to the side of the road to talk to someone whose kid was on the playground. It is what it is.

I don't talk about you and I hope that you don't talk about me (even if you bag my groceries at the store and see that I am an impulse shopper grabbing Skittles when I see them on sale for buy 2 and get 1 free).

No. We live on a friendly block, and I barely even see my neighbors anyway. But principals and teachers are people just like anyone, and they probably don't want to see YOU that much, either! Don't let it be a deterrent. Buy where you want to buy. Just don't spread any gossip of things you notice.

Ha ha, yes. My husband thinks I'm so weird about this, but I feel awkward bumping into teachers in our town. I try to be cool, but I feel like people are always cornering them to talk about their kids.

It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. I'd just try to be casually pleasant with the principal and not expect to be BFFs.

I dislike my child’s ES principal and have had bad interactions re our IEP. It would bother me to live next to her. Without the IEP issues, though, I wouldn’t have to interact with her much and probably wouldn’t care.

No. Growing up I lived in the same neighborhood as two teachers I had, and two principals of schools I had attended (small town!).

One of my kids was in trouble frequently in lower elementary school, spent a lot of time in the principal's office. My other kids have never been sent to the office, only know the principal from assemblies and seeing them in the hallway, etc.

So I wouldn't assume that it would be awkward. But it might be.

Would you have feelings (either way) about living next door or across the street from your kid's principal? Say the house next door goes up for sale and you find out the person buying it is the principal of the school your kid will attend (public school that your house is zoned for.)

Would it matter to you if we are talking about elementary school vs. High school? Would it matter if you have several children--so basically you know you will have 10+ years of your kids attending this school ahead of you (vs. if your youngest child will graduate in a couple years?)

Would it make a difference (to you) if the principal has kids the same age as yours--so your kids would potentially be in the same class, trying out for the same teams, etc.?

If you (or someone you are close to) is a principal, would you feel awkward having your students as neighbors?
