I always envy rich people for their money. Money is essential. I worry about it all the time. It would actually be weird if I didn't envy that.
But the other stuff? Everyone in my family is smart, attractive, talented. The rich people I meet, I don't think they are on another level in that respect. They have nicer clothes and better homes. They take better vacations. They don't worry about saving for college or retirement. But they aren't inherently better people. Just richer.

I am envious of extended families who, after now decades of my observation, have real love and connection with each other. I am thinking of a family I know in which the sisters are very close, they prioritize family, support each other, uphold traditions that help their kids (cousins) become close. This family isn't perfect and has had many tragedies, and some of the nuclear families have serious problems, but they practice being family in a way that makes them healthier/happier. I compare their larger extended family with mine and I wish I had what they have.

The naysayers in these posts drive me batty. Some people really do have it damn good without much bad. sour grapes to think they all must have dark secrets. My BIL & SIL are that way, everything always comes up right for them and their kids.

I’m not one of those who thinks all of these types are unhappy.
However - this is 100% true - the “it” family in our neighborhood, everything you describe above and more, turns out a few years ago Dad had embezzled millions from clients AND was cheating with a coworker. Mom was a nice person (although definitely preferred her cool friends to us mortals) and I think truly had no idea. But she got a job, got a townhouse and seems to be doing right by the kids. I’m sure they all have major trust issues though.

My first assumption is that they have generational wealth and are trust fund kids. My next thought is that they likely have no work ethic, concept of the real world, and likely live in a household where intelligent conversation goes to die. I then think that they're completely vapid and walk away.

I must be pickier than you, then.
I don't see any family where every single member is good looking. I'm not a fan of most home styles in this area, even though in my neighborhood they're quite large and most of them are kept quite clean by the housekeepers. I see lots of courteous and friendly families, certainly, which is very pleasant, but I know for a fact, living in a small street as I do, that a few husbands scream at their kids and wives, that some kids turn into monsters at home, and that some wives gossip too much, and sometimes very nastily so... my own friends and I are not immune from marital problems and serious health issues.
So don't worry. You don't need to be envious of any of us.
