I bought a new XC90 in 2017 and did not purchase the extended warranty or maintenance plan. In hindsight, I wish I would have only because instead of selling the car in a few years like we normally would, we will give it to our teen when she gets her license.

As of now we have had only one major issue past the warranty period and that was with the sunroof leaking. I noticed it right away before any inside damage could occur and it was only $700 to have the seal replaced.

It is better than a CPO warranty. Those are after-market.

Those are manufacturer warranties issued by manufacturers

The term "after-market" means it was sold or put in place after the car has been titled, registered and used. It is not the same as an original factory warranty which is what you get when you buy the warranty from the manufacturer at the time of initial sale. It doesn't matter who you buy your CPO warranty from.

It actually does. A manufacturer CPO is functionally the same as an original warranty. A third party warranty can end up being a enormous pain if you have to get reimbursed after the fact and fight for OEM or local labor rates

Easily.

Look at it. I pay 2500 for the extended warranty. Another 1000 for the maintenance. A buyer has 2 cars otherwise equal. After 3 years, there are 2 years of maintenance and 5 years of factory warranty left on one and noting with the other. I have recouped the maintenance already (5 oil changes per year, free detailing every year, dealer loaner, etc.). All of it will dealer maintenance records. The other car is out of warranty, with fly-by-night records ("I change my own oil"or "My cousin's a mechanic" . . . right.).

How much more will you pay for the one over the other?

We usually buy them though the manufacturer and it's worked out for us more times than not. We also keep cars for at least 10 years

Who knows with certainty, but I'd guess we'll own it for 5-8 years or so.

We recently purchased a Volvo XC90 T8 (the hybrid version). Dealer gave a hard sell for an extended warranty (about $4200 to extend 4 year/40k mile warranty to 10 years/100k miles) and a maintenance plan (about $2600 to extend maintenance from 3 years to 10 years). We passed at purchase, but dealer will let us go back and buy later if we want.

Are these sorts of warranties ever worth it? I generally view them as tack-ons designed to make the seller great returns. But I have never previously owned a car like an XC90 before, so I may be missing something. Thanks in advance for any views!
