NASA. MCPS summer school is not going to change DC's world, but a great camp experience just might! There are new kids at MCPS all the time who don't start with summer school (which might also feel like a punishment to DC on top of a move, too).

The summer school really isn't doing much in the few weeks they have it and this year for MS they have said its more remediation vs. getting advanced. If you want your child to advance you need to do private summer school at Landon, Sidwell or another private. No question NASA camp and if you want, get a tutor.

Camp over summer school unless there's a specific academic need. Always.

Take advantage of the NASA camp while you’re there! My son did the MCPS summer school program before 6th grade last year when it was open to everyone, and it was fine, but nothing he couldn’t get during the school year. We looked at is as a way to become familiar with the school, and getting back into in-person learning after virtual. But it sounds like NASA camp will be a lot more fun!

The MCPS summer school: "These programs will be tailored for students with the greatest need of mitigating learning disruption. The curriculum is designed to support students who need additional or repeated instruction in the major work of the previous grade level and/or are currently below-grade level in reading or math, with an emphasis on foundational skills. Some students may receive specific outreach from their local school based on need."

If your kid is a solid B student, I would do NASA camp.

Do you mean this last camp? That sounds really cool. Do you know if it is full? https://summer.tulane.edu/courses

NASA Camp! When I was a kid, I did Space Camp (in Florida). It was totally awesome!! One of the best things I remember about my childhood.

NASA Camp!

There are a lot of MCPS haters on this Board, but your MS will do its best to place your student appropriately.

If he is excited about the NASA camp have him do that. MCPS MS curriculum sucks and is not rigorous. He'll be fine.

We are moving in from out of state to MCPS and wondering whether we should try and enroll our kid in MCPS summer school to get a head start on what school is like here or take advantage of a an opportunity to do a NASA camp at Tulane University. I will be in New Orleans for work for a week or so and it is a summer camp program through Tulane University. He is a good solid B student starting 7th grade middle school. Thanks.
