2. This year, the four VT-specific questions on the Common App were very important, even more so than the essay. The faculty member said they were specifically looking for an answer the indicated a kid that knows when to look for help. They wanted students who recognized when they needed assistance (academically or mentally) and then reached out for help. I did not read my child's answers to the questions, so I'm not sure how he hit this note, but he did get accepted EA with less than a 4.0 and a respectable, but not amazing, SAT score.

It's not just that they are more important than the CA essay. They don't look at the CA essay at all.

One essay must be “Why I want to be a Hokie” and another “That Time I Needed Help” and a third “That time I did something for someone else but ended up being about me after all”. What’s # 4? “Tell is one more thing”?

I am from another state. What is a Hokie?

A turkey

A Hokie is a Virginia Tech student. Their response to "what is a Hokie?" is "I am". Hokie Bird is the mascot. Dad of a VT engineer.

Can anyone estimate what the average stats are for kids from FCPS?

Nope 81 is it. Unless you want to possibly take all back roads which will take forever.

Our admissions guide said don’t apply undecided. Very few undecided spots. Choose something.

That’s interesting about the 4 sub questions. I don’t know what DS wrote; he got in EA but declined admission and canceled his Hokie Focus registration after deciding on a different school.

PP here. Should probably try that preview function. Also there this weekend. Our kid is an ED admit so we were there trying to get ready for freshman year and not comparing Va Tech to other schools to make a decision.

Apply as a geography major - they need geography students.

We were at Hokie Focus this weekend too! It is astounding to me that this was their most competitive year EVER. I feel very lucky that DC was admitted.

I was at the Virginia Tech admitted student day this past weekend (Hokie Focus) and had the opportunity to speak to a faculty member who helped review applications this year. Here are two things I learned that may be helpful to others:

1. 10 percent of the class is filled by ED. Another 80 percent of the class is filled by EA. That means 90 percent of the class is already filled by the time they read RD applications. Apply early.

2. This year, the four VT-specific questions on the Common App were very important, even more so than the essay. The faculty member said they were specifically looking for an answer the indicated a kid that knows when to look for help. They wanted students who recognized when they needed assistance (academically or mentally) and then reached out for help.
