Generally a fully packed 45L backpack is going to be at the max size for carry-on requirements on US airlines. So a fully packed 50L bag will be over, likely. What are the dimensions? Standard max dimensions in the US are 22x14x9, but usually you can go an extra inch or so on each of those and it will fit.

50 liter backpack? It can possibly fit. Depends how stuffed it is. Last summer I went backpacking out west and had a 65 liter bag stuffed to its gills. No way it would fit overhead, so I put it in a big duffel and checked it.

The airline posts the acceptable size for carryon. I have never heard of 501 but my daughter just carrived on a very stuffed backpack and was fine.
