Subject: Fingers slammed in car door — possible not broken?
My sister accidentally slammed a car door shut on my fingers when I was like 10-ish. They were red and swelled up for most of the day but then were almost normal the next day. My parents didn't even give me ice/pain meds/call a doctor-- we literally continued on to wherever we were driving like nothing had happened! Very different time.
That's to say-- this is common and breaking a finger is harder than you think. I think you'd know if it's broken, like continued pain, swelling, etc.

This happened to me when I was 7 years old - door slammed on my hand. I was fine.
Happened to my daughter at 8 years old - door slammed on finger; she had a minor fracture and had to be splinted.

Bodies have this miraculous way of telling you when something is wrong and hers is telling you that she’s fine. Don’t make a hypochondriac.

This happened to me a few years ago. Door was fully closed. I didn’t see how it couldn’t have been broken. Went to ER and nothing wrong. If she’s not complaining, I’d save the cost of the X-ray.

I did this in law school and fractured the tip of my pinky. The finger swelled and was painful. If there’s no swelling or pain it is probably fine. I ended up with a infection in the bone and lost my nail— it grew back. It was very painful.

Same here. Did this as a kid and my mom had to fumble around in her purse to unlock the door, so I was stuck for a good minute. Those poor Kmart shoppers were freaked out by my screaming. Nothing broken.

I did this twice as a kid and didn’t break anything either time.

Ha my kid just did this yesterday. My sister was in a PA in the ER for decades before moving to an office, and she said not to go in if he had feeling and circulation in the fingers. A break would be unusual, and smash injuries are more likely to yet circ and nerves.

I did that when I was a kid and was lucky not to have any serious injury. There was a gap in that car door just enough r to not do damage. If there is no pain or swelling you have no reason to be concerned.

I’d have it evaluated. My brother slammed my fingers into the door of a ford panel van in the early 1990s. No break but man was that painful.

My DC did this. Not broken. Keep up the ice and ibuprofen. It will look awful for awhile but will be ok.

Why? I just can’t believe there wouldn’t be with the door closed.

DC slammed a car door on her hand today. The fingers initially swelled, but the swelling went away after icing and she said the pain was gone too. Would it be possible for the fingers not to have been broken? The door was completely closed. The hand was on the hinge side, possibly buffered by the rubber lining.
