I agree with the last poster. Small liberal arts college in a small town vs big research university with easy access to big city. The 2 choices are very different. Neither us better for a student who is undecided, but both have distinct advantages that the other doesn’t have. Where she feels more comfortable should probably be the biggest factor in making the decision.

Personally I would favor the small liberal arts college as long as there will be money available to pay for grad school. If there is not money readily available for grad school, then UMD will offer more undergrad options for something that she can get a job in upon graduation. And even a small difference in cost can be put aside for grad school if needed.

They are both good schools but so different. UMD is a large university in a suburban setting. I think types who do well are independent and assertive (lots of great research opportunities and classes, but you have to seek them out), and/or who prefer some anonyminity. Gettysburg is obviously much smaller and there are easy opportunities for close relationships with professors, classroom discussions, more personal feedback. Socially, Gettysburg will be more of an insular bubble. I really think one atmosphere will naturally appeal to your DD more than the other. GL!

I would let her choose. In general, MD is probably better but that doesn’t mean it’s where she will do better. In other words, there are plenty of opportunities and research opportunities at a big university like Maryland but it’s easy to be lost in the shuffle. Gettysburg is smaller and she will meet students from all over, expand her world a bit. I think there are a few majors where it would really make a difference (business, computer science, engineering, music, art history, journalism), but probably not for an undecided liberal arts major.

I think Gettysburg has pretty strong social and natural science programs, especially for social science subjects like history, political science, and public policy, and economics. For the natural sciences, the small intimate class sizes and relationships with professors and peers can be important for student success and persistence, as well as for securing research. FWIW, we made the same decision three years ago between Pitt and Oberlin for our daughter in biology and economics and it's working out pretty well so far. Best of luck and congrats!
