I just said that I had a child who didn’t yet qualify for the childcare. I got it pushed a few times but not excused. I got called a few times in DC and had to call everyday and never actually had to come in person.
One time I was seated on a jury, but naively said that I liked the police and had a good experience with them when I was the victim of a crime (which was true). I was immediately dismissed. If I get called again in DC, I will effusively praise the police and probably get struck by the defense.

I requested to be excused and was denied… It even asked if I had a child who wasn’t potty trained, and I was still denied.
Then, I'd bring my kid.
I got excused. We had no child care, no family help and my husband started a new job/no leave.
