I believe Trader Joe’s also has packets of soup, just add water and microwave.

I watched few youtube videos on how to make dashi and miso soup and it really is easy. Just go to youtube and search ( how to make miso soup) and dashi stock. I got kombu/bonito flakes at Whole Foods and ordered miso paste on amazon.

the packets at the grocery store (I get it at Safeway, but I'm sure Hmart has a better selection and maybe lower price) are pretty good, in my opinion.

I’m Korean-American and here’s what I would do for a simple miso soup:
Buy at HMart: soybean paste (or red or white miso), kombu sheets, tofu (silken or firm, whatever you like), scallion, garlic
Boil water with a 2” piece of kombu. Let it cook 15min to flavor the soup. Remove the kombu. You can discard or eat it. Then add chopped garlic(optional) and cook another few mins. Low heat and add cubed firm tofu or big blobs of silken. After a few minutes, make sure the soup is not boiling, and put a big spoon of miso or soybean paste in a ladle. Dip into the pot to let a little stock into the ladle, and stir the stock/paste together and release into the rest of the soup. Add green onions on top and you’re done! If you want to sneak more protein in you could make the broth base with Bonito flakes or chicken bone broth.

Do NOT boil your miso soup! Miso is fermented and has good bacteria, which are killed off if the temperature goes over 114F. I believe that was my father's first cooking lesson when I was a child...

I just get dashi (safeway has vegetarian) powder packets, boil, add miso paste and then tofu and veggies. Lots of recipes online.

It’s dead easy to make at home. All you need is kombu (at most grocery stores in DC these days), bonito flakes, soy sauce, and shiro-miso paste.
Boil kombu in ~4 cups water for 20 minutes, add 1/2-1 cup bonito flakes, turn off heat and strain, saving the liquid. Now you have dashi. You can smash buy it bottled or powered at H Mart probably.
To make miso, heat dashi, then add soy sauce and miso paste about a spoonful at a time (to add, fill a ladle with broth, then beat in the paste with chopsticks until the lumps are gone, then pour back into your pot) until you like the taste.

Buy jars of miso paste at Hmart and mix with boiling water to your liking. I like white miso. In the refrigerated section.

I’m pregnant and nauseated all the time. For some reason Miso soup is the only thing that settles my stomach and makes me feel like a human. I wish I could order Sushiko for every meal but sadly that’s out of budget. Anyone make great miso soup at home? Happy to make from scratch or buy a box at H-Mart but would like to get as close to the restaurant version as possible.
