I just explained to my sophomore that anywhere not within a day’s drive is too far. I went 8 hours from home. That felt far enough that my family couldn’t just drop in on me, but easy enough for move in/out.

Honestly, she is likely stuck with state school because we are DCUM “poor” and can’t pay $200k+ for her degree. she’s not a good enough student for scholarships, either.

+1

I encouraged DC to apply to UK schools and have encouraged study abroad for an entire year.

Now back to reality.

Amtrak tickets, plane tickets, storage units, time off from work to move the kid in and out--all of that adds up for some folks.

yes, for some and not for others

If so what is your thinking as well? I feel like there are two kinds of parents on this thread. The ones who will let their kids go absolutely anywhere. And those who have communicated a radius.

We are lower middle class and are currently not allowing the kid to apply to schools that would require a flight. Kid already knows that if the school they choose is 3+ hours away, a lot of their transportation to and from will consist of riding Greyhound buses.

We are full pay and I would let my kids apply anywhere. My oldest applied to some CA schools because she is interested in entertainment and I thought that was a good reason to be in LA, for example. She didn't get into UCLA or USC so she is closer. My younger is not sure what he wants to do when he grows up so I don't think there is any reason for him to apply to schools that far away.

I would also say I'd be more inclined for some schools that are far but near airports with direct flights, versus schools you need to fly, then drive far distances to get, simply because that seems like a barrier to coming home and there are reasons to want to come home sometimes, even for the most well adjusted kid.

We didn’t set any geographic radius, dd ended up about 3.5 hours away. I will say that the parent Facebook group is constantly addressing the stress/logistics of long distance travel, storage over breaks etc and it makes me grateful we don’t have to deal with all that. But would I have forbid a school she had to take a plan to if it was really where she wanted to go? Probably not.
