I don't understand why this needs to be formalized, and thus elevated in importance and visibility in this way. If a student/ family/ parent has a problem or an incident - do you really feel so uncomfortable that you can't just take it to the teacher or, if need be, the division head? Why come up with something like this? Parents have their kids in independent schools precisely because we don't want to deal with bureaucracy, and we want to think we have a listening ear among the teachers and the admin.

This is troubling on many levels.

There is a difference between imagining yourself a victim and being an actual victim.

Sexual assaults go unreported for a multitude of reasons.

Your logic is:

Women are blamed to being victims therefore everyone claiming to be a victim should be assumed to be telling the truth even if evidence proves they are making sh*t up.

Don’t borrow trouble. If people use it as described it sounds fine. If there are spurious reports or kids don’t get a chance to defend themselves or f accused then cross that bridge when you gone to it. I tint see any reason to think that will be the case.

I’m a teacher (not at GDS). It’s very common for schools to have a mechanism for anonymous reporting of incidents at school. Not sure what is shocking about this. A report is just that. It’s not a disciplinary proceeding or punishment.

Would you prefer that if those things happen students learn they should ignore them? Is the school better off ignoring them?

I see nothing that suggests that anyone will be punished based solely on this reporting tool, but gathering data and empowering those who are on the receiving end of such actions is important.

GDS launched to kids in Middle and High School a “pilot” program that any kids can use to report “bias incidents”

I’m not sure how to feel about this as a parent. The message my kid got was use this form to report on other kids.

The description of what counts as a bias incident is really broad. “Micro aggressions” are encouraged to be reported - this is nuts. These are 12 to 18 year olds. Seems like the false positive rate will be high and could cause lots of issues for alleged perpetrators.

We are a non-white family at the school - we are bought into the school and its mission.

But something about having kids report on other kids and making that reporting a sanctioned process really annoys me. Even though they warn about false reporting, this feels like going down a terrible rabbit hole fed by the cadre of consultants and staff that the school retained around DEI in the last year.

I fear this experiment will fail with some noteworthy problems that make the school climate more close-minded.
