OP: Thanks for these ideas
He's 1500+ SAT, 4.0 unweighted GPA at public, not sure what weighted is. Lots of APs.
Not sure what first choice is yet. Like some reach schools but really need to find some safe ones.

Safety School -- Small Liberal Arts --St. Mary's Honors College in Md. If you tell us what DC's first choice is that would make it easier to identify back ups.

Totally never talked about on this board, but I thought University of Cincinnati was a neat medium sized school tucked in a neighborhood with easy access to a nice little city. They have a nice co-op program that was interesting to DC1 a few years ago.

AO at a recent visit was blunt about safeties and high stats students. They are overwhelmed with applications that seem like a kid just kept clicking buttons in the Common App because it was easy, not because the kid was actually interested. AO said they really are looking for demonstrated interest- in person visit, communication with AOs, as part of evaluating fit, before they are making offers to high stat students.

Let's not call them safety schools, but options to look at:

Clark University (Worcester, Massachusetts)
Union College (Schenectady, New York)

West of Chicago:
Macalester College (Saint Paul, Minnesota)

As soon as one is named, everyone will apply there and it instantly will be a reach. This is the world we are in now.

For high stats kid who will be a liberal arts major (political science maybe); wants to stay east of Chicago; probably not too far south. Likes small or mid sized schools in or accessible to cities. Geeky, serious kid. Not looking for party scene.
