And restaurants shouldn’t be telling customers that they’re not tipping enough (or servers or delivery drivers). That’s about as unprofessional as it gets.

This. Tipping is an optional expression of appreciation for the service. I would never order again from a restaurant that said this or employed a delivery driver that said this.

I tip well for good service, but I refuse to be bullied into tipping anyone. That is the height of tackiness.

Telling OP "to sign" was meant to cover her adding the tip & signing

And having to sign a paper receipt is common with over the phone payments. Vendors think that will cover them if credit card company declines charge, usually though it actually won't protect them.

I definitely would have in that situation but wouldn’t have ordered again from that restaurant. How much did you tip?

Call the restaurant back and tell them that they should pay the driver a higher wage. (assuming he's employed by the restaurant, and not an app like doordash, uber, etc).

This right here is hor$e$hit and it's time to shift costs back onto the employer, one customer at a time:

I ordered delivery today and when the delivery guy came to drop off the food he held out a receipt for me to sign. I was surprised since I’d already paid through the online order system and told him so.

He kept trying to get me to sign it. It was weird and I didn’t understand why. It was a little hard for me to understand what he was saying. He called the restaurant while we were going back and forth and when he hung up he told me that I needed to tip him more as I hadn’t tipped enough. He was trying to get me to sign a new receipt so I could tip more.

He then proceeded to tell me that he didn’t make any money delivering my order, that’s it cost him more to drive to my house than it was worth, he’s not going to make any money, and if I don’t pay him more tip I shouldn’t order delivery anymore from them. This is a local restaurant that we ordered from - one that we hadn’t ordered from in a couple of years.

I called the restaurant after he left to let them know and they told me that their other customers typically tip more, backing the driver. In retrospect, I probably could have tipped more generously originally, but I was put off by the whole conversation with the driver that I didn’t add anymore to my tip at that time.

Should I have paid the driver more tip when he demanded it?
