A better question is why would someone move to an area where car break-ins are a routine thing? Like, that’s just to be expected? Like the weather? Pfffft, no. Just no.

That only works if you have a garage, which many city dwellers do not.

Really, just don't leave anything visible inside that could entice someone to break a window. Don't worry about your title and registration, just leave in the glove box - nobody cares about those. They care about backpacks, AirPods, charging cords, money, sunglasses, etc.

Do not leave your title in the glove box!

Yes, that should be kept in the house in a safe place.

I never worry about anyone breaking into my car or stealing it. Because I don’t have one.

Faraday box for your car keys overnight, and make sure it’s one that works.

Garage is the correct answer. If you choose to not have one because of where you want to live, recognize your vulnerability is necessarily higher. It's a cost of living where you do. Insure against theft, keep the car locked, and don't leave anything in the car you'd miss if stolen. If you'd like to recover your car after a theft, keep any tracking feature subscriptions active.

Many thieves can't operate a manual transmission, so that's a vehicle type which might be less attractive to them, although the car may be broken into before the thief realizes the car has three pedals instead of two.

Don’t leave the keys in it.

We recently moved to an area where cars are shuffled through not infrequently and cars are stolen every few years. What do I need to do to protect myself, beyond keeping the car locked and not leaving any valuables in it? Should the registration and title be kept in our house, or would we need to put them back in the car every time we drive?
