You can put the bottle inside a sock and knot it. This way he'll not be able to get to any pieces if it breaks.

I take my dog to the park by our place and jet him pick up a bottle off the basketball court; there are always empties left behind! He crunches it for the rest of our walk then we dump it in the recycling bin. He’s 14 and still loves this.

If you take the bottle cap off I don’t see why it’s not safe. My lab used to live playing with empty water bottles. No harm was done.

They like the crunchy sound. There are toy water bottles for your exact type of dog.

Dog will occasionally chew a kong but will go to town if it gets a hold of a plastic water/soda bottle. Obvs not safe at all—but any ideas of a toy that is similarly firm/crunchy but not breakable/dangerous?
