I would have never hosted a birthday party for kids who are playground age without having at least one or two activities. Geez, of course you do something or you look cheap and lazy. Have a game or an art activity. Step it up. Don't be like your lazy Millennial peers.

My kids play at the park with their friends all the time.

What about little parachute people to drop from the play structure? Or bouncy balls to put down the slide? Masks and capes are fun with the 4 yo set.

How old? The older the kids, the more likely you need activities.

Nope, we did a five year old birthday party at a playground last year. We let the kids play for about an hour, fed them, and then most of them went back to play. When they're that little, they just want to play on the equipment with their friends!

This is a good idea. Think about games that don't require supplies, like "Simon says" or freeze tag just in case. I've done a bunch of park parties for one of my kids and they almost always prefer to just play on the playground equipment. I leaned the hard way after coming up with a bunch of elaborate games and crafts that never got used. Chalk is nice if you get kids that want something mellow. Hula hoops are fun because they also can be the favors.

We hire a bubble man to put on a show and let the kids do huge bubbles. How many kids can play cornhole at once? Like four? What will all the other kids do? Yes, you need an activity.

We usually do a piñata and it goes over well.

I don’t think so. Might not hurt to have a couple games up your sleeve though just in case.

We have reserved a DC picnic area at a playground for my five year old daughter’s birthday. It’s only 2 hours and there will be pizza and cake. Do I need any other activities? I was planning to set up a cornhole beanbag toss thing but that’s about it.
