It’s all about expectations. There is no real difference between a kid with a 1350 who has the same GPA And general profile as a kid with a 1500. The difference is that the 1350 sets his expectations lower and gets in where he should. My kid is someone who has a lower SAT but a very high GPA And excellent everything else. He’s have done just as well at an Ivy as a kid with same profile but a higher SAT, he just didn’t even bother applying because his score is lower.

He is into a top school which was a target thru ED. Again the 1500 academic twin let’s say he has, is probably stressing out waiting fyi hear about Ivies next week.

All in the expectations.

Average Jane can go to JMU

Average Jane needs to be in the top 1/3 or her high school class, coming from most FCPS high schools. At that's with practically the entire class able to be college bound.

It’s lonely at the top.

Again, a 30 ACT is 93rd percentile. Average ACT is 21. Why does everyone on here seem to think everyone gets 33+? It’s just not mathematically possible.

You don’t get “yield protected” doing ED. Probably not even EA. This sounds like someone blew their ED wad on an ultra selective school and now is bitter that they aren’t getting good results RD.

OP’s post made me laugh out loud—1350 is not average!

I think having reasonable expectations makes for happier children. Also, 1350 is far from “average”. I see kids talking about their 15 rejections, but only applied to schools with <30% acceptance rates. Kids need to find a school with a 75+% acceptance rate that they could actually see themselves thriving. Then they’ll be happier.

You need to recalibrate your definition of “average”. A 1350 SAT is 92nd percentile and is still a very good score (by definition, whether or not you think it is). An average SAT score is 1050. There is no way you want you “high stats” kid switching places with the average one.

High stats kids have so much competition for the schools they want to attend. Then they are yield protected at lower level schools. In some ways a kid with a 1350 has it a lot easier and a smoother road to their college picks than a kid with 1550.
