This is an old thread but Chapin is considered top tier while Nightingale is one notch below occupying a similar space as Convent of the Sacred Heart!

Interesting! Spence was our top choice after our tours. Brearley next though, the girls did seem lovely. There was just something about the environment at Spence that I thought would work for our daughters.

I'd rank NBS next in my personal ratings. We would have gladly sent our daughter there if Spence or Brearley did not work out. Way above Chapin for us.

They are both great schools. This is not the kind of inquiry that is going to yield you anything useful. It depends on your daughter and her personality. Go for a visit and see which place feels better to her.

Is Spence top tier but NBS isn’t? Why would NBS be ranked lower than other girl schools like Spence or Chapin?

Have daughters at NBS. The girls are mostly very nice. The middle school is the weak link definitely.

I will tell you that both schools have moved far left in recent years, so you have to be ok w that. Many families have left both schools for this reason.

I love Spence. My girls are getting a wonderful education there and it’s a great community. In all honesty, both are great schools.

I had this choice for sixth grade many many years ago. I (well, my parents too) chose NBS because it was known to have nicer girls and just a better vibe. Spence has always been very flashy and known for mean girls. Gossip Girl was written by a NBS grad but everyone assumes it’s about Spence, that should tell you something.

FWIW, and this is 30 year old data - I switched to a coed school for HS and there were 5 girls who came in from Spence, they were all incredibly smart super-star grinds so I have always admired Spence for that.

FWIW Nightingale seems to be a top choice these days. Their reputation in the neighborhood has really excelled. Families with kids there seem really happy, which is not always the case with other schools.

My info is outdated BUT- Spence is top tier and NBS is not. I’ve heard Spence attracts a rather flashy crowd , take that for what it is. A lot of loud displays of new money.

Spence is higher status and brand wise. So, Spence.

But both are great choices.
