np Says the person whose kids are willing to do drills with you...lucky you! My kid needed the repetition and the math skills that Kumon gave that schools today don't give. It helped her gain confidence and improved her math. Later when diagnosed with ADD, inattentive they told me it was good we did it because it improved her memory.

No, get their workbooks and work through them yourself.

Absolutely! I put my three kids in Kumon for two years each in early elementary school so they would become lightening fast at math facts. I kept them in it until they finish level E which is fractions. They were the fastest students when they had time tests. And now it pays off when trying to do algebra problems because they don’t have to exert any mental effort to reduce a fraction like 36/48 or 16/56 or add/subtract/multiply/divide when solving a complicated problem. They tell me they have kids in their classes that are still having to mentally manipulate or use fingers to do addition,subtraction, multiplication facts. Homework in upper grades in math gets completed faster so there is time to supplement with other math programs like Beast Academy/Aops.

? I don't do Kumon with my kids... but I did *as* a child. It requires parents to pay, transport, and then remind kids to do their daily math packets. The only thing it does for you is the curriculum... and since many of the contemporary Math curriculums are low on kill & drill, it can be an effective supplement.

Sure, I can handle it, but I’d rather play with my kid than do math homework. If you are limited on time, OP, Kumon is great. Then you get to do the fun stuff.

As what, something to get them to help because they need more of a challenge, or keep them on grade level?

With first graders, math is still pretty simple. It’s addition and subtraction up to 20 and then simple word problems. It’s pretty easy to keep them on grade level with just a little bit of parental help at home.

It is better than nothing, but I agree that good parenting is the better option. You can handle elementary math.
