There are 2 different Computer Science programs at NYU. One is in the College of Arts & Science and is on the main campus in Greenwich Village. The other is in the Tandon School of Engineering, which is located in downtown Brooklyn, nowhere near the main campus. These are 2 very different academic programs, 2 very different locations, and 2 different college experiences. Which one are you considering?

Yes. IMO, it’s foolish to select an expensive private school when a less expensive option with equal educational opportunities is available, even if you are wealthy enough to afford it. I also bought a Toyota when I could afford a much more expensive car though. Obviously, lots of people don’t agree though and that is fine.

Not for the price.

For an ivy I might lean toward it assuming the finances are there, either through FA or savings. Same with NYU, if the finances are there. If it means a large loan, I’d think hard.

Does your child want to be in NYC? Someone who wants to go to NYU would be unhappy at W&M, and vice versa.

NYU is far, far more selective. Congratulations to your kid - it’s a very hard school to get into. It will make him stand out in the job market.

Sure. If you can afford it, it’s worth it.

Yes. I think so just based on the kind of school NYU is. Your kid will get city savvy and independent fast. Typical college experience schools like UVA coddle kids for another four years. NYU is reality (except in nicer dorms for the first few years). The connections there are great too.

In CS, most programs do a good job in the terms placement. The job market is super hot and there is no distinction between NYU, VT, or even the ivies. The only thing I would pay money for is a better educational experience: more access to professors, smaller classes etc. NYU does poorly on these counts. So, NYU is definitely not worth the cost.

You are talking about urban, rural and suburban (historic) towns.

We are looking at NYU over VT for the arts.

For computer science, you don't have to be in NYC and can work anywhere. Not sure it is worth the "degree of difficulty" for cost of living.

or better to go in state at W&M or VA Tech
