No, you really don’t treat her like a person, PP. You don’t dress her in clothes or buy her books to read; you don’t let her eat at the table or put her in diapers because she can’t use the toilet.

Dogs aren’t people. Dogs are actually better than people. To call a dog a person diminishes them.

I'm sure they're not - gosh all they probably meant was their dogs are loved and like their children (because perhaps they don't have any). You are reading too much into it.

OP here. No, not at all. I have a gorgeous, sweet dog whom I love. I’ve just never referred to her as my four-legged child and never heard anyone else do it either.

We say it ironically. But dogs can mean a lot to people and like the PP, some friends who couldn’t have kids due to infertility, adopted animals and consider them like family.

Some people do. I find them odd.

Dogs do require a lot more time, money and attention than cats ime. They can be like having a baby/toddler in some ways

But there is no way I would refer to our dog or cat as children. They just aren’t. Humans and animals are very different. I love and enjoy our animals, but it is just not on the same level

It's true for me, but then, DH and I have chosen to remain childfree.

I know the kind of people who misuse this whole idea though. Some dog owners are obnoxious and narcissistic. Then again, some parents are as well.

Anyone saying that their dogs are their actual kids need to get their head examined.

Someone just said to me “I have two four-legged children”. It took me a second to process what the hell they meant. Is this a common way to refer to dogs?
