Yes I've done many backpacking trips and washable skirts, dresses, and large pashmina type scarves have served me well. The hardest thing, in my experience, is shoes because I do a lot of hiking and what works well for hiking looks a little out of place in a cathedral. But a long floor length skirt can hide boots, sandals, or sneakers. I got one amazing one with lots of elastic ruching around the waist that can be a long skirt or pull up to be a strapless dress. Throw on a shrug or scarf and it's great for a night out.
