You have the right to do whatever you want just tell the school the truth. “We have some financial concerns about affording this excellent school through 12th so we are going to get on a savings plan and re-apply in a few years.
The school doesn’t owe you another chance but I don’t believe they would just scratch you off the list. Be honest when you re-apply “we have had time to save and we know DC needs are met at this school.”
I have a DD who is not following her sister to an all girls school - yet. She is happy at her public elementary. The school knows she has a sister but never asked or mentioned her. We will likely make a shift in middle if we can afford it and she wants. But I don’t think the school would shut us out because we didn’t put her in asap.
This is similar but not the same as your concern. When you’re ready, go through the process again.
I think you are responding to me. I declined one wait list but stayed on two others based on morbid curiosity. I doubt they will make an offer, or give us the FA to make it happen.

I don't think it's automatic like they don't even consider your application. But admissions get increasingly competitive later and they are looking for reasons not to admit your kid so they can winnow the pile. If your kid is a total standout, maybe you'll get in anyway. I'm sure it happens sometimes. But if you didn't like School X enough to pick it in K, why would they choose your kid over a few dozen other applicants for 9th? So you can decide not to attend again?

That’s not totally true but it does get harder. We have declined then reapplied and accepted. You need a valid reason, good relationship with the admission team and of course they must want your family part of the community

I am split between NPS and St Patrick's like a bunch of people. I truly do not know and do not want to burn the other school if I send my child to one over the other.

So, relatedly, is it better to take oneself off the waitlist earlier at a competitive school if you think you may want to apply again later but are uncertain if you'd be able to take the spot or not this year??

I’m not sure you realize how competitive things are at the top privates in this area. Why would they take the chance with you again?
There are other schools, but the time to decide if you’ll take a spot if offered is before you apply. You take your first choice if you’re fortunate enough to get multiple acceptances (few are).
