Many families have/had children at both. IME, they are pretty comparable and the choice comes down to the vibe that a particular student likes. So what does your son think?

Re: St. John's, how can it be unwelcoming when it starts in 9th grade and every single student in the freshman class is therefore new to the school?

The three students I know at SJC are very welcoming and the opposite of stuck up.

There are girls at SJC which changes the dynamic. I think for the better. If I had the choice between the two I'd go with SJC.

Yes. I think they are so different that a kid would be able to pretty easily decide which fit he would prefer.

My kids are at Gonzaga and love it, but we know families with kids at St John's who love it. Jesuit tradition/education is a thing in my family (not legacy) and I really loved the 'brotherhood' aspect at GZ, as do my boys. Really strong friendships.

They both provide excellent academics. They both are competitive when it comes to sports. They are rival sports schools, particularly for football. They both are Catholic. They are both college prep. Aside from that they are very different environments starting with the fact that one is single sex and one is not. One has an entire military program and one does not. One is more downtown DC and the other closer to Chevy Chase and uptown DC.

These things have a real impact in the vibe and culture. Your DC can get a good education at either, but would probably have a preference of one over the other.

First, you can't go wrong. But if your child shadowed at both, he should be able to differentiate because they're SO DIFFERENT. I'm surprised he doesn't have a preference. If you're going to make the choice for him, I guess you have to really think about the pro/cons of single sex education, if you place any value on Jesuit education, if there's a sport/activity that your son values that has an edge at either place. FWIW, I think the boys gone wild behavior can be found anywhere and it's not a constant undercurrent at Gonzaga.

Which school did your DS prefer after his shadow days? He is a teenager not 4 years old. Let him decide where to go to high school. He must have an opinion, especially given one is co-ed and one single sex.

No I honestly want good solid info. It has been a really tough decision to decide on which school. We don't know anyone who has kids at either I have been searching for comments and have seen the negative. I am looking for the positives of both.
