There are houses that look great. We live in Arlington near a metro stop and dream about a big lot and big house. If only it wouldn't mean our kids giving up their friends and schools.

I am not the PP but I lived in Potomac for 15 years and it is much more racially diverse than Bethesda which is where I live now. My son was the only white child in his friend group of more than 10 boys, that is something that we really miss living in Bethesda.

Most parts of Bethesda and Kensington are not walkable to anything, so it's silly to act like that's a deciding factor. (And even if you could, for example, theoretically walk from Huntington Parkway to downtown Bethesda, almost no one who lives there actually does.) But yes, Potomac is in general a further drive from DC and is not close to any metro stations, so it's not as desirable.

It’s far, and unfortunately has been ruined by large gaudy cheaply built late 90’s and 2000’s McMansions, so it just has an all around tacky, gross, cheap look to it. What’s the point of living in a outer suburban / semi-rural suburb if the picturesque, rural feel has been completely shattered by just ugly, ugly homes? Makes more sense to have an in city house, and then have a second farm property in a rural area that hasn’t been ruined yet like Loudoun or Albemarle counties.

I was surprised by this too. Even $800k can get you a fairly nice house in Potomac that’s zoned for Churchill, and it’s still a good distance from DC.

Potomac seems like it was built up later than Bethesda was, so you’ll see more of those mid range McMansion subdivisions there than you will in Bethesda, which is an old inner ring suburb.

People who chose to live in Potomac prefer larger and newer houses, bigger yard, and close to nature. There are more diversity in Potomac than Bethesda and Kensington. Most of people who purchase in Potomac careless about walk to shops and restaurants.

I could be off but it seems like more mid sized homes in the $1-3M range are coming up in Potomac and Bethesda/Kensington has been smaller, dated homes or new builds/over 1.7M with no middle. So I wonder if it’s that homes are more “affordable” in Potomac or it just has that mid range size/price that seems to be what a lot of people want. There are plenty of expensive houses there too.
