The all about spelling program seems a bit complicated to get started- how do you use it?

I highly recommend All About Spelling. It’s a homeschool curriculum and it is amazing. My third grader struggles with spelling and has improved so much. It’s about 15 minutes a lesson. I do it right after dinner about 3 to 4 times a week. What’s amazing about this program is that it gives kids spelling rules - my daughter was just not picking up the patterns on her own and the way spelling is taught in schools really does not help someone who just doesn’t get. For instance we both learned this rule:

Floss rule: When a one-syllable words ends in f, l, or s, double the final f, l, or s (mall, off, etc.)

Start with level 1 which is basic but will provide a nice foundation.

SRA Spelling is my go to, but definitely research it yourself to see if it might work for your kid. They will need to be tested for starting level but you might find that information online with some digging or just request the school do it. You might be able to teach the program yourself if you have the means to purchase and time to train in it and work with them, or can just have the program written into the IEP if they have one. For all testing and/or IEP requests I suggest starting with a written request (on real paper, not email) to the teacher and copied to the principal and special education director. If theschool objects remember IEP laws are federal- do your research, know your rights, find an advocate to help get what programs you need for your child. I’m by no means an expert in this area

My late elementary DC needs help with spelling. Still spells phonetically most words. This issue has been flagged repeatedly in parent teacher conferences. Not sure whether DC needs basic phonics work or something different. School didn’t have a particular recommendation other than might be related to a mild auditory processing difference.

Any suggestions for where/what to look for?
