This. I have some friends who just say "Mom" or "Dad" and it always makes me do a double-take.

Now, I can’t stand when my MIL talks to me about my mother and/or refers to my mother using her first name.

MIL (to me): How’s Doris?

Me: Great. She heading to the beach for a few days.

MIL: Please tell Doris I said hello.

Sorry this PP above and I didn’t state clearly what bothers me…maybe just the stilted way she uses my Mom’s first name? MIL rarely uses the term, “your mom” when referencing my mother to me but says my mom’sfirst name instead.

Is Doris hosting Thanksgiving? Would Doris like to join us? We saw Doris at the garden center, we saw Doris the other day

Yes, we are all in the same town.

Same here. I only call them Mom and Dad when talking to other people who call them Mom and Dad.

This^.

+1 I even say my mom to my half siblings (same dad). I have a very good/close relationship with my parents.

+1

If I'm recounting a funny or exciting story, and they are basically characters in the story, I might call them Mom and Dad. If I'm talking about them or something they did, I'd say my mom and dad.

So...

"My mom made great lasagna and my dad loved to fish."

But...

"So there I was, standing in the middle of the living room, dripping wet and holding a bucket of fish, and the smoke alarm is going off, and Dad's trying to wrangle the chickens, and Mom says, 'I hope you remembered to buy milk!'"

There might be cultural or regional differences. I don't think it's necessarily a reflection of closeness.

I'm very close to my parents but say "my mom" and "my dad" when speaking about them. My friends do the same.

I say my mother and my father, because that's how I translate it from the French.

Ok, I’ve noticed people I know who are extremely close with their parents say mom/dad. My father died and my mom was very abusive and I say mom.

My... with dh and all others. Mom/dad with siblings. If I took out "my" with others I'd feel like a nostalgia film narrator (like Sandlot or the Wonder Years)
