Exactly! There is not staffing for kids to eat outside. And yes, middle schoolers are going to do stupid things like litter and start fight clubs. That is totally normal development. Inside they can monitor it. Outside they can’t. Stop being a pain in the ass to staff. Your kid can eat inside like the vast majority of the school did even when there was a choice, and they will be fine.

Schools aren’t government institutions? That word has broader meaning that what you may be thinking.

Anyway, time outside with fresh air is good for everyone. Being cooped up inside these school buildings day in and day out has an impact on kids.

Oh sure, cater to out of control kids instead.

If they're going to make a change, they should at least let parents know. The small percentage that are immune compromised can discuss plans with their kids.

Apparently there are a few teachers that let kids come in their room to eat on rainy days - windows open and less kids, spread out, etc. It's nice that they have done that for the kids who have special circumstances.

He's disciplining the entire school for the actions of a few. They really can't pinpoint who the litterers and wrestlers are? Good lord.

My younger kid is at WMS, and my older one was there a few years ago. When the older one was there the administration instituted assigned seating in the lunchroom to tamp down disruption issues. If they haven’t gone that far yet, tell your kid that it can get worse. They may have taken it another step to silent lunch- I don’t recall.

I don’t love the principal, but I like that he’s willing to impose a little discipline and structure.

Apparently a bunch of kids pretending to be in "fight club" (wrestling each other) also were cause for the issue.

this is the way APS folks deal with "problems." It's easier to just shut down a situation to prevent a behavior than to single out and actually discipline perpetrators. Especially now with so much focus on disproportionate discipline and racism. Just punish everyone. No discrimination or bias, and the problem is solved.

What the heck? A bunch of boys were throwing food/littering and now the rest of the school cannot eat outdoors? Put those kids in detention and let the other kids eat outside. The best part is parents were not notified, we found out from our kids.
