Subject: UT Austin - Turing Scholars
My daughter was also accepted into UT Turing this year. I am from Houston. My daughter is from a very competitive high school with a very strong STEM focus. This year it is very difficult to get into UT CS, not even think about the Honor program Turing Scholar. In the high school, even the top 1 student was rejected by the UT CS.

FCPS student. Straight As in every class, except 1 A-. Probably about 15 AP or DE classes. SAT 1540 (800 in math). AP test scores of 5 (UT sent an email asking for his AP test scores). His ECs are STEM focused (math honor society, computer science club, etc). He does volunteer at a food pantry weekly. Attended VA’s summer residential program for math, science and technology.

I was in a different Honors program at UT (Plan II) but had a truly great experience and want to really encourage you to support your kid going!

And if CS is his thing, it would be a really bad idea not to let him go unless he also got into MIT, Stanford, Berkeley CS or CMU SCS.

One thing that has me worried is that UT doesn’t guarantee freshman housing. Part of the allure of the program is the scholars all live together in an honors quad. We’re late submitting the housing application and worried he won’t get housing in honors quad. Is that really something we should worry about?

Housing can be tricky. But there are off campus options that I suggest you should start looking into as a backup.
But Turings Scholar---make it work!

DC was accepted at Univ of Texas - Austin in the Turing Scholars program. He is super excited and it has become his top choice right now over other schools/programs. I don’t know much about the program and don’t want him so far away. I’m trying to come to terms with it. Other than what I read online anyone know much about this program? Any Turing Scholars out there?
