You are right of course. But I’d love to see really popular sports, where there are cuts, have B/C teams that practice and maybe don’t even have games. Just to allow those kids to play, enjoy the sport and maybe improve over the years.

I have a kid who starts over varsity team members on their club team who is now hoping to make JV. When she found out she had no chance at varsity, she started calling them benchwarmers to their faces, so not great for club camaraderie

I was nervous last year when my son was a Freshman, this year we're both more relaxed.

However, he was upset he made the JV team and not the Varsity team.

School politics!

It's not stressful for ME! I graduated years ago. There are tons of ways to play sports that don't involve a school team. If the kid wants to play, they'll find a way.

I wasn't so worried when my ds was trying out for basketball, but my dh was quietly losing his cool and nursing his anxiety with whiskey the night the announcements came out. His level of worry was almost comical. This was just for freshman team, not varsity, but they were making more cuts than in normal years so of course a lot of kids didn't get to play as they hoped.

This is a bizarre post. HS sports are extremely important to 100% of the kids trying out, kids who don’t make the team will be sad, and it’s completely normal for a caring parent to hope their kid doesn’t have to go through the disappointment.

Hope it works out for your kid, OP. We’ve been on both sides of this situation.

I was sweating it but didn’t tell DD
She made the JV soccer team and I am so proud of her. Did tell her that

I am sweating it out too. Have a freshman girl trying out for a JV LAX team. She's good enough I suspect, but there are many girls trying out. But the boost to her self-confidence would be huge. It's such a delicate dance. She has to put herself out there to grow - but the negative reinforcement can squash progress made. Ugh!

Cut the cord. Your child's successes or failures are theirs, not yours. And high school sports is completely inconsequential.

I have freshman twins.

One had 5 days of tryouts last week (including Saturday) and found out he/she made the JV team They took 15-18 kids and cut 30-40. I was on pins and needles all week--he/she is new to the school and social stuff has been hard and I was just really hoping this would come through for him/her.
My other one has tryouts starting today. 4 days. 10 spots. 36 kids trying out. It makes me nauseous thinking of it. This kid has worked out all winter long. Endless conditioning. I hope he/she makes it but he/she has a better social support system at school so from that perspective it's not as important.

Anyone else going through the hell that is high school tryouts?
