Is this true re: W&M? We're waiting to hear application status and were aware of the heavy workloads, but also heard it was a supportive environment. Didn't know the freshman dorms were also horrible - is that true?

Allegheny, College of Wooster, and Ursinus have smaller, supportive environments. I echo Muhlenberg. Drew University in NJ has a built-out advising program that offers more than the traditional single major (or pre-major) advisor.

No. Freshman year my kid was in the one that is regarded "the worst." It's more bare bones than many places but it was totally fine.

I have a friend with a son there and he's absolutely found his place and people. Good suggestion.

They don't have air conditioning and are very old.

Not suggesting a particular school, but I think you should consider schools within a four hour driving distance. Freshman year can be hard and if he needs a weekend break it’s so much easier within 4 hours.

I think you need to describe what you are seeking by “kind and gentle” - do you mean kind students (all will have some but bone will have all), easy connections with profs, actual academic and emotional supports.

for starters-Dickinson, Albright, Elon

in state colleges in dcum area - JMU or SMCM
