We will be in this situation in a few years. We are actually fine with either middle school (Hardy or Deal) but would rather our kids stay with their friends. I've heard from others in this situation that they were able to enroll their kids with their cohorts and did not have to enroll in their IB middle school. I'll report back in 4-5 years.

This is correct from when I looked one year ago. Your kids stays with his/her cohort as they move to the feeder middle and high, regardless of where you end up living in DC. There might be some stricter rules for attendance if your child is out of bounds but still in the feeder pattern. But I am not sure on that.

It’s not about breaking the rules. Because Elementary schools don’t have away to differentiate IB that moved a few years ago and OOB, the middle school of record will be that feeder school.

I’m just keeping it real. The registrars do not keep track of which kid is IB or OOB. Thus all 5th graders info is sent to feeder middle school. I can assure you this is how they do it at Deal. When Deal gets the records they don’t have a way to determine whether you came in as an OOB that lotto’d in or a one time IB that moved OOB.

No it doesn't. It all clearly says you get to stay though the terminal year of your IB if you move OOB. Not you have feeder rights into the MS.
If you live OOB and you lottery into an ES, you get feeder rights to the MS regardless of where you live.

It’s not at someone’s discretion but more that no one cares to check. It’s a gamble you have to be willing to take.

If I move out of bounds (still in DC) for my ES, but the principal allows me to stay at the school until my child graduates, does that mean I can stay for the MS that it feeds to? Whose discretion is this and how would I register each year?
