I wouldn't say they are ugly, but they aren't evergreen, so yea, it would be just twigs during the winter.
Having stated that, when they do bloom, they are pretty amazing. We have several different kinds (colors), and they seem to bloom a few weeks after each other.
There are actually evergreen azaleas. Stewartstonian is one.
Native azaleas are not evergreen
