PS Why an amnio and not a CVS?

CVS has slightly more risk. It can also be done sooner, if you need to plan for termination.

I’m a genetic counselor. Honestly, all MFMs in the dc area are very experienced with amniocentesis. I would not hesitate to use the sibley MFMs.

I had my first and only at 42, and opted for genetic screening first, and my risk was very low (to the surprise of the genetic counselor who said I most certainly should consider a CVS or amnio) so did not have a CVS or amnio. I would suggest making sure you get your genetic screening on the earlier end (I think you can do it at like 10 or 11 weeks) so you have the info early since CVS has to be done earlier than an amnio.

You need to research the hospital/practice that does the most amniocentesis in your area. In my case, it was GW hospital. I had 2 done. The first from an older very experienced doctor who retired the following year and another with a woman doctor. Both amazing. It is very safe now. I think GW’s miscarriage rate is the lowest in the area.

I love Dr. Driggers at Sibley MFM. She did my last-minute amnio when I was 42. Baby is now almost 3!

You might have more luck in the expectant moms forum. I didn't have amniocentesis, but had CVS with Dr. Harvey Stern. He was amazing.

Hey,
I'm a 42 and pregnant with my first (and probably only). I am considering an amniocentesis and wanted to get recommendations for the best facility/physician in the area given the risks involved in the procedure. My referral is to Sibley but I wanted to do some research before going there. Thanks in advance for the advice!
