Varsity rifle is a great sport and perfect primer for Biathlon and other Olympic shooting sports.

W-L crew (rowing) has green days beginning in October at the boathouse. They have a website with info. It’s perfect for students who are curious about rowing. The season itself begins in February, since it’s a spring sport.

Girls volleyball is cut, but it might be easier to join at the freshman level.

Non athletic, in-person options to meet other students include newspaper and drama, off the top of my head. They are academic courses.

But fall sports like cross country, cheer, dance, ultimate, freshman field hockey, fr. volleyball, etc., are the best for making friends, since practice begins over the summer before school starts. The cross country and ultimate frisbee teams are historically very large and either would be a good way to meet others during the summer.

Thanks, sadly i know DD is not into cheerleading or dance!

As of a few years ago when my son was there, football was at least de facto no-cut. You might never play, but you could stick around and practice with the team, do the weight training, etc.

W-L has a Rifle Club and a Rifle Team. The Rifle Team members compete and it is an official APS varsity sport like any other with a gym banner. The Yorktown Rifle Team won the district this year.

Cheerleading and dance team have fall and winter seasons and both are no cut.

We are new to the area and looking for ways for DD to make friends as freshman. Seems like with COVID clubs are still online or such.

Crew (rowing) at W-L has historically been no cut and is the school’s largest sport. The swim and dive teams are also usually very large and may accept all interested swimmers. Indoor and outdoor track and field are no cut. Football is no cut and would readily accept any interested athlete. (Cross country and ultimate frisbee have already been mentioned. Ultimate frisbee has become wildly popular at the school.) Wrestling may also be no cut and like football would readily accept any interested student athlete.

In the past, I believe most all interested athletes ended up on at least one of the lacrosse teams (frosh, jv, or varsity) even though spots are technically limited.

The school’s Ice Hockey team is a club sport not officially sponsored by APS, but it is popular among the students. I’m sure it would like to grow further and expand into both jv and varsity teams.

While not an official VHSL varsity sport yet, some area public schools are starting boys volleyball club teams. Perhaps there might be growing interest at W-L.

For basketball, which is cut, many students form rec league teams (sponsored by the county) with friends.

There are a lot of opportunities.

I think crew, as well, though that costs money.

Essentially anyone who wants to play will be able to be on the football or boys lacrosse teams, though they are not formally no-cut.

Not sure about WL -- but ultimate frisbee generally takes everyone
