Masks are not why your child has a speech delay. Get a few time a week speech therapy and look at UMD Leap.

We really liked the Montessori schools we toured, but they tended to be more rigid and nervous about any kind of special needs.

What I have heard is to look for a school with a therapist or learning specialist on staff that is more aware of the needs of children with disabilities. That would make it more likely for them to accommodate your child's needs.

Maybe the Outdoor Nursery School in Chevy Chase? Not sure whether they have openings, but since they're outdoors, I would sure hope they're more lenient about masks.

Our youngest was finishing up his time at Children in the Shoe-East West Towers during the early part of the pandemic. They definitely follow rules, but they're also extremely reasonable, IME (having sent all three kids there), so they may at least be willing to work with you, especially if your pediatrician is recommending it.

I'm really sorry, OP. It's such a lousy situation.

I’m sorry, OP. May this end quickly.

Bump, hope you get some answers. I hope for all of this that these rules will be relaxed soon. I’d also recommend talking to your nearby schools about an accommodation and see how understanding they seem. That’ll be a clue how they will behave in coming months. Get a dr note to support the discussion.

The county is requiring masks for kids age 2+, and I don't know any daycare/preschool that isn't vigilant about it. I would suggest you look at places in VA.

I actually really like all of these schools but I hate that the rhetoric has become so fixated on this idea that masks are fine, kids don't mind them (they're better at it than adults! which of course we're super sure of even if this hasn't actually been studied) and we have to keep them indefinitely otherwise the school is not safe.

The “kids don’t mind them” seems so silly to me. My four year old would love to watch Peppa Pig and eat Goldfish all day - she wouldn’t mind that! But there is a reason we don’t let preschoolers make certain decisions.

We are looking for a new preschool in the silver spring/ Chevy Chase areas. If your preschool is pretty liberal on mask please let us know if you recommend it.

We would like- no masking for outdoor play, teachers wearing see- thru masks, liberal policing of masks on the kids, somewhere that will drop masks as soon as possible.

Please no hate- we are a very liberal educated (both work in biological science areas) family and believe this is the best decision for our child.

They are all governed by the county, which is still requiring them. So I am not sure you can find this in MoCo. Our preschool did no masks outside when it was over 80 degrees (so all summer) last year, and hopefully will again. But I can’t recommend that you switch there based on that hope - it could all be for nothing.

No recommendation OP, I hope you find a place. I'm so hopeful that soon you won't have this problem at all. With the right interventions, your child will be on track soon. Good luck!

No hate, but I think you need to think about your list a little bit more.

You don't want a school that doesn't enforce its own rules. I know you want a school that will move to mask-free soon, and that makes sense. But a school that is still requiring masks but not actually enforcing their own rules is going to be a school that doesn't enforce other rules that you might actually care about, like not sending sick kids to school.

Thanks- that what I meant mask lenient. Although “liberal” by definition means open to new ideas- so we want some where open to the new idea of not harming our kid with masks given they are in practice not very useful for little kids.

I think what you’re looking for is “mask lenient.” Calling it “mask liberal” is confusing.
