My DS is in PS3 at Maury. We are mostly happy with it. My son loves school and has made lots of friends. the PTA is super active (meaning they apply for grants (and receive them) all the time, raise awesome sums of money, attract tons of parents with skill sets that make things happen), and the before/after care is terrific. i can't see how any other public school, on the hill or in the city, beats maury. [we are in-bounds, but still got wait-listed at maury until another class was added. our other choice was ludlow-taylor, which is also a fine school.]

Maury is wonderful, Brent is wonderful, Tyler Spanish Immersion is good, Cluster has some highs and lows but mostly great (Montessori is all filled up too). Others to consider are Miner, Ludlow-Taylor, JO Wilson. If you found a place that works in-bounds for Maury and you have a kid K or up for next year, I say grab it. You'll be happy.

There are a couple posters who always bitch about Hill parents who speak positively about their kids' schools. Why is it offensive to like your kids' school? How was the PP implying that the problems of DCPS are solved because there are a few good schools on the Hill?

Do you have a sib preference? I know several Hill families in bounds who did not get into Maury P3 this year. How do you know already that your child will get in next year?

another Hill parent in NE - we had no luck getting our 3 year old into any of the more popular schools on the Hill (brent, maury, cluster, watkins) so took a chance on Miner (primarily b/c it has a reggio program). we are very, very happy and our son will continue there - at least thru K. the best thing to do if you want to hear more is to give the principal a call or send her an email - she's very responsive. i also suggest visiting the school and meeting the pre-school teachers. i'm sure you'll be as impressed as we were - with the school itself (brand new) and the teachers (very personable, dedicated). b/c not as popular (yet anyway) you'll have a better chance of getting in. good luck!

If you're looking before K (when they have to take you if you're in-bounds) you won't get in at this point -- the PS-3 had almost 50 in-bounds and sibs on the waitlist plus dozens of others. I think Polite Piggy's is the before care and after care. I wish I had as good after care at my DC's DCPS as Polite Piggy's. Ms. Thomas is very well organized and has really good rapport with kids and staff.

Another Hill parent. We're on the K waiting list, but can walk to the school in less than 5 minutes. The inside is more up-to-date so don't let the building exterior scare you. The PTA is very active and the preschool teacher runs Polite Piggy's, which is a day summer camp and offer parents options when school is out for holidays. I think before care too, but I'm not 100% sure.

Another Hill dweller here. Don't have direct experience but people on Moms on the Hill and the newhilleast list (you can go to yahoo groups and ask directly to be put on newhilleast -- moms on the hill you have to be invited) rave about it. Definitely worth checking out.

How old is your child? In the last few years Maury has made huge strides. There is a huge waiting list for the younger grades. The younger grades are very diverse. The aftercare is excellent. I would love to have my younger children go there but may not apply because no one gets in OOB to preschool there. On the Hill, most people think more highly of Brent and Maury than Watkins. Watkins is a very big school and I hear not great things about the leadership there.

Maury has a great new principal. I hear that it is developing a really nice reputation. The Capital Hill Cluster School is the group of public schools that have been most sought after in the past on CH. They have several programs, a traditional pre-k and K and a reggio emilia pre-k and K (School Within a School) housed at Peabody, a Montessori program (3 yo - 9 yo) and a traditional 1st grade - 4th grade housed at Watkins and then a traditional middle school housed at Stuart Hobson.

DH and I have found this beautiful house that we want to rent in NE DC. We have a DD, I checked the DCPS website page that tells you what school your kid qill go to according to your address and Maury came up. How is it? is it a decent school? which one is the best one on Capitol Hill? Also what is Cluster?
