Because school security is an actual county job, like at many companies. Why does it matter who the employer is?

From what I understand, it's not just 911 level stuff they take care of--for example they might walk the building and make sure no doors were left open/unlocked...that kind of thing.

I went to Elementary, Middle, and High School in PW in the 80s/90s. All three of my schools had security officers living onsite.

I was a security resident back in the 90's at an elementary school. In exchange for living on school property, you get free rent/utilities. Some of the schools (the older schools) have mobile homes on the school grounds. I lived in a mobile home at a school in Dale City, VA. I had to purchase the mobile home, but I did get free ground rent and utilities. I loved living at the school and it's a great way to save money!

At our local elementary school in Prince William county there are signs in two of the parking spots, saying they are reserved for resident security. I asked in the school office about it (I was there to volunteer) and they told me that there is actually a little apartment built into the school for security to live in! A person (or sometimes a married couple) lives in that little apartment at the school to provide security over night.

I guess they get reduced/free rent? Do they also get paid a salary, or do most of these people have a "day job?" How do they find these people--I assume they have to go through a throurough background check, but are they people with any specific skills/training?

Is this just at elementary schools, or do the middle schools and high schools do it too? Do other local school districts do this? I grew up in another part of the country and never heard of anything like this!
