Not just football. Look at basketball and schools like Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana, etc.

And big time basketball and volleyball programs.

Here’s another hint: big state flagships have the whole state rooting for the teams. States in New England have more smaller, prestiges liberal arts schools to pick from, so sports don’t seem to get the support that they have in the Midwest and South.
