Thank you for helping to clarify. MCPS should have specified Wheaton as a target as well as MCPS as a whole.

The MCPS message references threats to several schools as well as racist language. There must be more posts out there.

This is frightening. As a mom and teacher this is my absolute worst nightmare.
I’m not sure if my family will be going in tomorrow. None of us are at Wheaton, but the first part of the threat seems vague enough that it’s got me very anxious.

The “low level” sounds terrible. It is like they are seeing “if it happens, we warned you”.

This is alarming and the wording about a low level threat and not that it’s a hoax. This is the first I heard of this.


Dear MCPS Families,

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and Montgomery County Police (MCPD) have been made aware of a number of online threats being made toward schools in Montgomery County. These social media threats are similar in style and content and mention a school shooting intended for Friday, Feb. 4 and include racial and hateful comments.

The Montgomery County Police have investigated and determined the validity of these threats to be low-level. MCPS and MCPD will continue to monitor social media and will actively investigate any specific threat in our community. The community is encouraged not to share these messages online but to report any such threats to local law enforcement. Montgomery County Police have committed to having officers ensure that schools are part of regular patrols on Friday.

If you or your child becomes aware of a student who has a weapon or is planning to hurt themselves or others, please immediately contact the local police and the school administration. Anonymous tips can also be reported to the Maryland SafeSchools Tipline at 833-MD-B-SAFE (available 24/7).
