The variants will keep on coming. It depends on the severity of the strain whether we need to continue to mask.
Look at flu. We have new strains each year. The vaccines are based on previous year's strain of flu, and have very low effectiveness.

Try schools in Virginia where it is now parents' choice. We are at a k-8 like you describe and are very happy with the policies in place.

My kids like them more too.
Same with my kids. I also work in a school and am masked all day, and KN95s are way easier to breathe in for me.
OP - I think what you're describing isn't specific to any given school. Schools are drawing mask guidance, isolation rules, etc. from DC Health. They're not just making this up.

KN95 mask requirement is really bad for kids. I am so sorry.
Our private does have a mask requirement; cloths and disposable surgical masks are acceptable. KN95 is recommended but not required. I find this policy to be a great middle ground. It is in VA though.

I don't expect any school in this area will be full "normal" this school year. Maybe in Va where the state rules are being relaxed? Our school in DC was talking about relaxing things in late Oct. and early Nov. then Omicron hit and it didn't happen. Maybe they will revisit this spring but who knows. But they were never talking about removing the mask mandate but were considering more relaxed polices around lunch, classroom layouts, field trips etc. At this point I just hope things are "normal" in the fall but who knows what covid curve balls will hit between now and then.

I'm not sure what you're looking for. You won't find a school in DC without a mask mandate because the city still has a mask mandate. Are KN95s that big a deal? Just buy some random ones from Amazon that are probably fake. My kid actually thinks they are more comfortable than her cloth masks.

I think a lot of schools rightfully panicked during the omicron surge. If things subside for a long stretch, I believe many will start a slow return to normalcy.
