A academics are probably a wash. Agree that Auburn and Indiana will be a better fit for a kid that’s really into spectator sports. For a kid who loves hiking and skiing, Boulder would be the place. I’d think too about differences in regional culture. Southern vibe vs. down-to-earth Midwestern vs. more of a west coast feel.

Auburn is actually ranked #1 right now for basketball.

Auburn leans conservative, Boulder leans liberal, and Indiana is more middle of the road.

It's 67% white, compared to Auburn's 80%. Admit rate is not a good measure of the quality of the education provided. Almost all colleges admit over 50% of their applicants.

They're all comparable academically, so you can look to other factors.

Auburn leans heavily conservative, has a southern vibe that a northerner might or might not resonate with, is 80% white, and is highly focused on football and Greek life. Only 70% of freshmen live on campus, which I wouldn't like. It does have the warmer weather going for it, though. Unless that all sounds inviting, I wouldn't take that option.

The other two schools are more diverse ethnically and have a bigger diversity of interests, too. Personally, I'd take Boulder in a heartbeat. Being so close to such great hiking and having such a gorgeous setting would be heaven for me. The cost is a bit higher, but not not enough to make a difference IMO.

Boulder unless kid is really into Finance. Then Indiana. It is also a beautiful campus. If money is concern Auburn and Indiana are typically more generous with merit. Good Luck

I don’t have an answer for you, OP. However, these schools are on my 11th grader’s tentative list. Can you tell me what other schools you had on your list? It sounds like our kids may be similar. Thanks!

(CU Boulder, not UC. No, there isn't a good reason for this.)

Can you provide a little more context? What are your DC's interests? How much do they care about things like sports, politics, weather, distance from home, etc?
