OP here and I feel comfortable getting recommendations for over the counter iron supplements with less side effects from other moms who have either taken them or had their doctors take them. Iron supplements are not a controlled substance, are not a prescribed medication, and the risk of severe complications when taken at normal or lower dose are very minimal.

Thank you to all who provided suggestions, I really appreciate it.

Will she eat dark chocolate? One serving of dark chocolate has 35% of your daily iron. Add a bowl of Cheerios in the mix and your good.

+1. This is what my internist recommended. I have lots of digestive problems and this has not bothered me.

My sister has been pretty severely anemic all her life, and she takes prenatal vitamins for iron because they’re easier on her stomach. She just buys the Target brand.

Proferrin. It is a heme iron supplement (non-vegetarian), so it doesn’t have the same side effects as the others.

Vitron-c. CVS branded Vitron-c works well also.

SlowFe is the only one I can tolerate. What kind of side effects did she have?

My doctor recommended Vitron C. Doctor also recommended Colace with it.

Does she have to take the supplement everyday?

I take Slow Fe, but only three or four days a week. Otherwise, it would be very hard on my stomach and digestion. I don't have much side effect from taking it every other day.

I wonder (just a thought) if your DD could take Flintstones vitamins with iron? That's what I took as a child/teen.

My 15 yr old DD needs to start taking an iron supplement. We started with what the doctor recommended which was called Slow Fe but it had way too many side effects and my DD will no longer take it. I have reached out to the doctor a couple of times for alternatives but have received no reply. Any suggestions for supplements that are easier on the stomach?
